Los Rios Community College District provides mental health and wellness events – The Express

Mental health challenges among college students have become an increasing concern in recent years. The growing focus on college students’ mental health has spurred a number of studies that have researched the specific mood disturbances and other struggles students grapple with, including suicide, eating disorders and addiction, as well as the driving factors behind these challenges.

The Los Rios Community College District mental health and wellness team is holding a series of mental health and wellness events this fall to equip students with resources to address some of these issues. Topics include achieving balance and maintaining mental wellness during the COVID-19 pandemic, and addressing how to support loved ones who could be at a higher risk of self-harm and suicide. The events are open to all students and employees.

These workshops serve as a reminder that students are not alone in the challenges they experience, said Chase Moore, interim director of mental health and wellness for LRCCD, in an email.

“Our overall wellness is a journey and something we pursue daily. Educational workshops support our students through skill building [and] providing social connection,” Moore wrote.

The workshops are designed to educate and inform students on how to cope with stressors, achieve balance in their lives, and support themselves in times when they might feel emotionally out of control, according to Moore.

Two workshops will happen this Friday, Sept. 24, from 3:00-4:30 p.m.: “From Surviving to Thriving: Finding Balance and Achieving Wellness Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic” and “Rising Above the Risk: Supporting Ourselves and Those We Love Who May Be at Higher Risk for Suicide and Self-Harm,” according to a recent Cityscape email announcing the series. Both workshops will take place on Zoom. No registration is required.

The Los Rios mental health and wellness team will continue to hold mental health and wellness events each month and will advertise the dates at the beginning of the month, according to Moore. There will be a different topic covered each month.

In addition, TimelyCare, LRCCD’s health care partner that provides free telehealth services to Los Rios students, is now offering group sessions and is hosting a series of mental health webinars, according to the Cityscape email. Participants must register for the webinars.

“In the Company We Keep,” a new therapeutic support group for Black women students, will launch Tuesday, Sept. 28 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. The group will meet virtually once a week for nine weeks to offer support in issues that many Black women face and to provide a space for Black women to talk through their individual challenges.

The group will discuss topics including microaggressions, romantic relationships, eating disorders, Black feminism and navigating space, depression and anxiety, sisterhood and friendships and sex, said Chioko Grevious, the group’s facilitator, in an email. Grevious is an associate marriage and family therapist, professional clinical counselor and has a master’s in public health.

“Each week will be a different topic,” Grevious wrote. “There will be an opportunity at the beginning of each session that will be used for check ins, which could lead to organic conversations.”

Because the group will discuss sensitive topics, Grevious says she hopes that the same group of women will attend each session in order to create a safe space for participants, though she understands that schedules can change. She will stop taking new participants in the fourth week of the group.

For more information about the group or to register, contact Grevious at 916-424-3700 or [email protected].

Fly to Europe for as Little as $109 One-way With This Airfare Sale

Miss out on a European summer vacation this year? Well, there’s still plenty of time to book a fall or winter trip this year — and if you book right now, you can score an amazing airfare deal. Budget airline Norse Atlantic Airways just dropped the sale of the year, allowing you to fly to Europe for as little as $109 (one way, that is).

The Norse Atlantic Early Bird Sale includes certain routes between the U.S. and Europe, including origins of New York, Miami, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles and destinations like London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Athens, and Oslo. It runs through July 29 for travel dates from September 2024 through March 2025 and excludes peak travel periods like the December holidays.

One-way fares on the eastbound leg start from just $109, but keep in mind that the extremely low fares don’t include a carry-on bag, an advanced seat assignment, or a meal. You can either buy those perks as à la carte add-ons, or you could book a more expensive fare that includes some of them. For example, upgrading from a $109 fare from New York to London to a $199 fare on the same flight includes a carry-on, a checked bag, and a meal, but no seat assignment.

Return flights from Europe to the U.S. are slightly more expensive, starting at around $269 for the basic ticket. Still, that means you can fly to Europe for less than $400 round-trip, which is a bargain nonetheless.

This sale also includes seats in the Premium cabin — the airline’s version of premium economy, featuring spacious seats with extra recline — with one-way legs starting at $342. All Premium tickets include a carry-on bag and two meals, but you’ll have to pay extra for a checked bag and a seat assignment.

“Our Early Bird sale is a great opportunity for customers looking to secure their autumn and winter travel plans at great prices without compromising on quality or comfort,” Bård Nordhagen, Chief Commercial Officer Norse Atlantic Airways, said in a statement.

Visit flynorse.com to search for availability now, and be sure to book your flights by July 29.

The Varsity Theatre showcases unique events –

Strolling down East Franklin Street, it might feel like you’re stepping back in time. Nestled between the local restaurants and UNC merchandise shops gleams the retro marquee of the Varsity Theatre.

Originally named the Carolina Theatre, the venue opened in 1927 as a single-theater, seating about 500 movie-watchers. Its name later changed to the Village Theatre in the 1940s and the Varsity Theatre in 1952.

The venue’s current owner, Paul Shareshian, said it would show popular films in its early days and, prior to him purchasing it in 2009, artistic independent films. It was when he took over that the space started to be more than your typical movie theater. Rather than just a film space, Shareshian added a stage for live performances.

While one theater continues to be a traditional viewing room, the other — with the added stage — is equipped with a lighting and sound system, along with a silver screen fit for live performances. Every year, it hosts student theater productions, a cappella groups and other community events.

“The events that you could come there for, one has nothing to do with the other,” Shareshian said. “Even on the same day, we could run events that are back-to-back that are really polar opposites in some ways.”

In October, for example, audiences could see a blockbuster film, a stand-up comedy show and a performance of the cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” all in the same day, he said

“Rocky Horror” has been a way to celebrate Halloween at the Varsity since 1978. Currently, UNC student-led theatre group, Pauper Players, directs and produces the production. It features a shadow cast performance with queer themes and chaotic fun, Madi Ugan, a UNC senior who has directed the show for the past three years, said

Ugan said students lined up on campus to purchase tickets as early as 10:30 a.m. last year. It was the longest line they had seen for the event, selling almost 500 tickets across four performances at the historic venue.

“To know that we’re performing for an audience in a venue in the same place that other UNC students and alumni have performed in the past,” Ugan said. “I just think that’s so cool, honestly.”

PhysicianLoans

Are you moving or planning to buy a new home? PhysicianLoans is the national leader in providing special home financing for physicians, and AMA members can access unique services and deals to help them achieve this milestone.

Physicians with high credit scores have a very low risk of default on residential mortgages even if they have high debt, few assets, or buy a home with little down. Normally, this can cause concern for underwriters who may approve the home loan but at higher rates. In contrast, PhysicianLoans focuses exclusively on serving the unique financial needs of doctors buying homes.

The PhysicianLoans program can offer financing with less money down than standard loans, plus no PMI and expanded underwriting guidelines. Additional benefits include:

  • Lower monthly payments: No PMI and avoid jumbo rates.
  • Less cash out of pocket: Less money down and even no money down available.
  • Portfolio loan: Special underwriting guidelines allow higher debt ratios and close up to 90 days before starting a new job. This means you can qualify based on your new income months before you even start working.
  • Expert guidance: Our loan officers stay with you throughout the home buying process, from early planning stages to pre-qualification, final approval and closing.
  • Flexible loan programs: Does not count your full student loans against you, and no pre-payment penalty. Not to mention flexibility is important during a resident’s life when schedules are constantly changing.
  • Special member benefit: AMA members can get a discount of $750 applied towards mortgage closing costs.** Be sure to let your loan officer know that you are an AMA member and eligible for the discount.

** Offer limited to one closing cost discount per loan. All loans are subject to application and credit approval, satisfactory appraisal and title insurance. Terms, conditions and loan programs are subject to change without notice. Other terms, conditions and restrictions may apply.

DRS Agent Network

The DRS Agent Network connects you to real estate agents familiar with the special needs, timing and considerations of physicians and their families at each career stage.

Many physicians, especially those moving to a new city, have difficulties finding a trusted, reputable agent that helps them the way they need to be helped. DRS developed a pre-screening and vetting process to ensure that the agents helping physicians are among the best suited to work with physicians.

Save time and money: Complete a short form with your contact information, housing requirements, and any comments you would like to share with the agent. Quickly get matched with a trusted DRS Agent in the city you are interested in before you arrive there—even if you don’t plan to purchase for several months. Since there is no cost and obligation, it does not hurt to hear what the person you are matched with has to say.

Work with a pro: All full-time agents are vetted and specialize in serving the medical community. Each agent is highly knowledgeable about the local community and is the one best suited to meet a physician’s needs. Each agent is prepared to answer your questions about the neighborhood, schools, taxes and local housing trends to help narrow your search.

Free member bonus: Enjoy peace of mind with three months of home warranty coverage for AMA members who buy a home using either the physicians mortgage loan or the real estate agent matching service.

The home buying and selling process shouldn’t be scary! A good relocation real estate agent will be able to provide you with all the information you need ahead of your move.

All trademarks are the property of their respective owners. Additional terms and conditions apply, including verification of current AMA membership status.

This Is the Fittest City in the U.S.

Have you exercised today? If you live in Arlington, Virginia, there is a good chance you answered yes. The city located along the Potomac River is again named the fittest in the nation in the 17th annual American Fitness Index, released by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the Elevance Health Foundation.

The prestigious report analyzes 33 health indicators, including chronic diseases and physical activity, recreational facilities, public policies, and environmental indicators, to rank America’s one hundred fittest cities.

While the Northern Virginian city, which has topped the yearly ranking since 2018, didn’t ace all categories, it had excellent scores in most.

“Arlington ranked first in community/environmental indicators. And, although it ranked fourth in personal health indicators, Arlington had the highest rate of residents exercising in the previous month (87.8%), had the most getting seven or more hours of sleep a night (76.4%), and the lowest percentage smoking (3.4%),” the report stated.

Earlier this year, Arlington’s public parks system was ranked the fifth best in the country based on size, access, investment, amenities, and equity. According to the Trust for Public Land’s ParkScore, 99 percent of Arlingtonians live within ten minutes of a park. The city received extra points for adding more playgrounds and for the variety of publicly available facilities like basketball hoops, splash pads, and dog parks.

Across the Potomac River from Arlington, Washington, D.C., is the second-fittest city in America. Residents in the nation’s capital have some of the healthiest eating habits, with 38 percent consuming two or more fruits a day, the highest in the country, and 21.4 percent eating three or more vegetables daily. Washingtonians were also in the top five for using public transportation, walking or biking to work, and regular exercise.

And Seattle won the bronze medal this year, with the report highlighting the city’s third-highest per capita investment in public parks.

However, the report’s findings also show that Americans don’t exercise enough to meet the minimum ACSM standards of 22 minutes of “moderate-intensity aerobic activity” per day and muscle-strengthening activities twice weekly. There was a decrease in the number of people getting seven or more hours of nightly sleep and an increase in those self-evaluating in poor physical and mental health.

“Post-pandemic, Americans are not as active as we would like,” Stella Volpe, ACSM President, said in a press release provided to Travel + Leisure. “To help facilitate this, local community leaders must step up and make bold spending choices, policy decisions, and infrastructure changes to increase opportunities for residents to be physically active and healthy.”

Lexington, Kentucky, and Miami had the most significant jumps in ranking. The former gained 31 places since last year to claim the 49th spot, and the latter occupied the 13th position this year, an improvement of 26 places over 2023.

The most pronounced negative position changes were for Tampa, Florida (losing 21 places to 45th) and Greensborough, North Carolina (dropping 18 places to 80th).

Ohio is home to multiple ‘Shawshank Redemption’ spots

play

Fans of “The Shawshank Redemption” — the top rated movie of all time on IMDb.com — have an opportunity to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their favorite flick during a birthday bash Aug. 8-11 at locations in north-central Ohio, where the movie was filmed.

Joining the celebration will be several featured actors from the movie including Bob Gunton (Warden Norton), William Sadler (Heywood), Gil Bellows (Tommy Williams) and many others.

When “The Shawshank Redemption” was released in 1994, few people realized just how beloved the movie would become over time. But the themes of perseverance, friendship and redemption apparently struck a chord, as did performances by leads Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman and a brilliant cast of supporting players.

Travel: Ohio artifacts can be seen in England

The evocative, haunting locations where the movie was filmed, many of them in and around Mansfield, also play a big role in the movie’s enduring popularity.

Today, several of those locations are destinations along the Shawshank Trail, which includes 15 visitor stops, most of which will be instantly recognizable to fans of the movie.

Stops that will host special Shawshank 30th events include the Pugh Cabin at Malabar Farm State Park, where protagonist Andy Dufresne sat in his car contemplating his wife’s infidelity; the Wyandot County Courthouse in Upper Sandusky, where Dufresne received his life sentences; and the most popular site on the Shawshank Trail, the historic Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, which portrays Shawshank State Prison where most of the movie is set.

After the real reformatory closed in 1990, its magnificent Victorian-gothic architecture made it the ideal fictional setting for several major motion pictures including “The Shawshank Redemption.”

Today, the former reformatory draws thousands of visitors each year — not just movie fans, but also history and architecture buffs and, because it is allegedly and famously haunted, ghost hunters and paranormal researchers.

The site is home to the Ohio State Corrections History Museum with historic items including the electric chair “Old Sparky” in which 315 people were put to death, and the Shawshank Museum featuring props, costumes and other mementos from the movie.

Visitors can take self-directed or guided tours with several different themes. The reformatory will also host anniversary bus tours that will stop at most Shawshank Trail sites Aug. 8 and 9. (The bus tours will not visit the last and only non-Ohio stop on the trail, Sandy Point Wildlife Refuge on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands — probably a good thing.)

Travel: Step into a fairy tale in Charlevoix, Michigan

The celebration kicks off Aug. 8 in downtown Mansfield at the historic Renaissance Theatre, a Shawshank Trail stop and the site of the movie’s premiere in 1994. At dusk, the theater’s back lot will host an outdoor drive-in-style screening of the movie. The theater will also show special reserved-seat indoor screenings Aug. 9 and 10.

The theater will also hold a cast and crew discussion Aug. 9 featuring movie director Frank Darabont, hosted by Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz.

“Shawshank” cast and crew will also appear at other events throughout the anniversary celebration including panel discussions Aug. 10-11 at Theatre 166 in Mansfield. Those panels include Q&A sessions with background actors who portrayed Shawshank prisoners and townspeople, and a “Behind the Scenes & Beyond” panel with the movie location manager Kokayi Ampah, who will discuss how and why sites in and around Mansfield became iconic locations.

Many events are free, but some include an admission charge. Some events are ticketed and may sell out in advance, so act early. For a complete list of Shawshank 30th Anniversary events or to purchase admission to ticketed events, visit shawshanktrail.com/event-schedule.

Two Maine Hotels Make Prestigious Top 100 in the World List

Maine is well-represented in the prestigious Travel + Leisure magazine’s top 100 hotels in the world.

To make the list at all is remarkable. To make it twice is a very big deal. The featured hotels are based on customer reviews, so the guests who have stayed there know what makes them amazing. Which Maine hotels are ranked among the top 100 in the world?

Originally built in 1887, Mainebiz says that it was bought two years ago by a New York City architect for a price they didn’t disclose. It was listed for $3.5 million. The description in Travel + Leisure says,

Formally restored in May 2023, this 11-room inn is a year-round escape housed within a fairytale chateau originally built in 1887. The perfectly-executed cocktails, luxe rooms, and attention to detail from the staff stood out to our readers.

I live in Maine, and I want to go to this castle in Camden!

#85 Quisisana Resort – Center Lovell, Maine

Quisisana Resort Trip Advisor

Quisisana Resort Trip Advisor

Last year the Quisisana Resort came in #22 on Travel + Leisure‘s list. It’s no wonder this made the list. This resort sits on Kezar Lake, and there is a lot to do in the great outdoors. Travel + Leisure described it:

Sleep under the Maine pines, take in live performances by the talented staff, or grab a stand-up paddle board at the all-inclusive Quisisana.

The words “all-inclusive” got my attention, as the food looks as spectacular as the view! This is a picture from Tripadvisor of a Sunday Brunch.

The hotel (it’s actually a luxury retreat) that came in first was in India. But Camden and Center Lovell, Maine, are a whole lot closer. Congrats to both!

My son keeps bringing his freeloader girlfriend to events uninvited

DEAR ABBY: My son is a sophomore in college. He has been dating a girl he met at school for almost a year. Her family no longer speaks to her for reasons I don’t know. I have included her in our family holidays, but she later tells my son that she thinks I don’t like her.

It causes problems for me when I visit him at school, which is often because it’s my alma mater. When I’m there, she attends all dinners and family events whether she’s invited or not, and I am expected to pay for her as well. My son has invited her to our house without my permission, and I do not want her to come. How do I tell him I don’t want her here without causing major problems in my relationship with him? — OPPOSED MOM IN OHIO

DEAR MOM: Teach your son good manners by telling him you don’t want anyone joining you for every family event and dinner without first being asked to include her. As much as he may like the girl, she is not (yet) a family member. Be sure to point out that you do not dislike her, but this is a formality you would like observed. The two of them are not a package deal.

P.S. The fact that her family doesn’t talk to her is a red flag that should not be ignored. Broach that subject with your son now.

DEAR ABBY: I’m concerned that my son-in-law is emotionally abusing my daughter. She was always a bit shy but was able to stand up for herself.

Recently, we were driving to a new destination and she was using Google Maps. It said we had arrived at our destination, but we couldn’t see it. After backtracking, her husband was able to find it. He then berated my daughter for “being unprepared and not knowing where it was”! No one had been there before, and we were following an effective app. She apologized to him.

I wanted to say something, but when I have in the past, she became upset with me. I see her confidence ebbing away. She needs to stand up to him. There have been many more instances. How can I help her return to being the strong and confident woman she was? I don’t think counseling would work. She doesn’t recognize what is happening to her. — MOM WHO SEES IT IN CALIFORNIA

DEAR MOM: Talk to your daughter privately. Explain that you are worried about her because she’s no longer the person she once was. Give her examples of her husband’s verbal abuse that you have observed and ask if she thinks she really deserved it. Offer to (quietly) pay for her to talk with a licensed counselor if she would be willing. Then cross your fingers that she will accept your offer and act on it without spilling the beans to her husband.

DEAR ABBY: Unfortunately, I was involved in a traffic accident. (The other party was found liable.) After the crash, the other driver was bleeding and had gashes. I experienced a couple broken ribs. Would it be OK to contact the other driver to see how he is? He was so polite to me at the accident scene. I really feel like he was a nice person. — BROKEN IN NORTH CAROLINA

DEAR BROKEN: I know you mean well. However, before contacting this nice person, you would be wise to discuss it with an attorney to make sure there will be no legal ramifications you might later regret.
